I’m loving the conversations about menstrual cycles online. And I love the apps that are being used to track. But I’m finding this information is sometimes misleading and there’s a lot that can fit within the realm of normal/optimal that people are worrying about unnecessarily.
Which is why we’re spending 4 weeks together talking all about the phases of the menstrual cycle!
Part 2: The FOLLICULAR Phase
When:
The days after your bleed ends.
What's Happening:
Many people find this hormonal shift brings a noticeable boost, often experiencing more energy, mental clarity, motivation, and sharper decision-making.
It can be an ideal time for big-picture planning and mentally stimulating work, which may feel more challenging during the premenstrual phase.
Socializing during this time can also feel especially nourishing and energizing.
wHAT’S NEXT:
Toward the end of the follicular phase, luteinizing hormone (LH) surges to trigger ovulation. This is the hormone detected by ovulation predictor kits.
Progesterone, however, is still not being produced during this phase.
If someone has a longer menstrual cycle (measured from the first day of one period to the first day of the next), it’s usually the follicular phase that is extended.
TL;DR:
This is a great time to get things done, just be sure to pace yourself!

Hi, I’m Dr. Janine, ND
I’m a Naturopathic Doctor currently practicing in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.
I truly believe that our enjoyment of life is closely tied to how we feel physically. When we’re healthy, we can take on anything. But when we feel off, even the simplest tasks become overwhelming. I’ve been through hormonal shifts, sleepless nights as a parent, and the stress of balancing everything. But I also know that with the right strategy, we can go from surviving to thriving—and create a healthy, thriving family in the process.
I look forward to meeting you soon.
