Taking Away the Guesswork: Why Labwork Matters

Your body is incredible! It’s resilient, powerful, beautiful… and let’s be honest, sometimes downright confusing. 😵‍💫

Despite all we know about human health, there’s still so much that can leave us scratching our heads. Why are you so tired all the time? Is your supplement routine actually helping? Why is your cycle irregular again? That’s where lab testing steps in. It helps cut through the confusion and gives us what we all need more of: real data.

✍️🔍Why Guess When You Can Know?

Let’s say you’re wondering if you’re getting enough vitamin D. Or whether your B12 levels are supporting your energy, mood, and brain function. These aren’t things we can accurately guess just by looking at someone or going off symptoms alone.

The same goes for more complex conditions. Fatigue, weight changes, mood swings, or irregular periods, they could all point to thyroid dysfunction, insulin resistance, PCOS, perimenopause, or even hypothalamic amenorrhea. These conditions may look similar on the outside but require very different treatment approaches. Labwork gives us the clarity to tell them apart and guide treatment in the right direction from the start.

⚡PREVENTION IS POWER

Lab testing isn’t just for when something feels off. It’s also one of the best ways to stay ahead of potential issues before they become problems.

High cholesterol doesn’t cause symptoms, but it can silently increase your risk of heart disease.

Elevated blood sugar may not feel like anything in the moment, but catching it early can help you avoid the path to diabetes.

Iron deficiency might fly under the radar for years, until you realize your “normal tired” wasn’t actually normal.

Having this information is empowering. It helps you understand your body better, prioritize your health goals, and stay motivated because you're not just going on intuition, you have the numbers to back it up.

🗣️“But My Labs Came Back Normal…”

This is a phrase I hear all the time, and it’s usually followed by a deeper conversation.

Often, key markers were never tested in the first place. Maybe your basic blood panel was within range, but no one checked your iron, B12, or vitamin D. Or your TSH looked “fine,” but we don’t actually know what’s going on with your full thyroid panel, including antibodies or free hormone levels.

Even when results are marked as “normal,” they may fall into a wide reference range that’s technically not disease, but still far from optimal. You deserve more than just getting by.

🔬Labwork + Your Story = Real Insight

Lab results don’t tell the whole story, but when paired with your symptoms, history, and lifestyle, they become a powerful part of the puzzle. They allow us to treat the root cause, track progress, and make informed decisions that actually work for you.

As a Naturopathic Doctor practicing in Ontario, I’m licensed to order bloodwork. While this testing isn’t covered by OHIP, many extended health insurance plans offer coverage. It’s a meaningful investment in your health, your energy, and your future.

➡️Coming Up: A Lab Testing Series

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be diving into specific lab tests and help you decipher: who should consider them, what the results tell us, and how they fit into a bigger picture of wellness.

I truly believe that our enjoyment of life is closely tied to how we feel physically. When we’re healthy, we can take on anything. But when we feel off, even the simplest tasks become overwhelming. But I also know that with the right strategy, we can go from surviving to thriving—and create a healthy, thriving family in the process.

I look forward to meeting you soon.
