Protein Powder
Protein powder is something I recommend quite frequently to patients. We often think of it as being key for bodybuilders or people who work out frequently, but the reality is that it can be a great way to meet the average busy persons' protein requirements!
Most protein powders have 20-30g of protein per scoop - which is a great start to the 80-100g needed daily for someone who's around 150 lbs.
There are MANY products on the market - the options can be overwhelming. I personally find an UNFLAVOURED whey protein isolate to be the most versatile and smoothest in texture. With the unflavoured whey protein isolate you can certainly add to smoothies, but can also add to oatmeal, peanut butter protein balls, baking, yoghurt, etc. While whey is a dairy protein - many people with dairy intolerances can tolerate it well as it's often the lactose or casein that causes more digestive concerns, not the whey. It doesn't work for everyone though.
When you're choosing a vegan option - my recommendation is to find something you enjoy (most important!) that ideally is a blend of a variety of proteins (hemp, soy, brown rice, pea...). Bulk Barn can sometimes be a nice place to start so you can try some options to see what you enjoy best.
Just because you're using protein powder doesn't mean you need to make fancy smoothies every day. Keep it simple, but get that protein in!
