This is Why Menopause Care Matters.
Did You Know: The average age of menopause in Canada is 51 years old, and the average woman lives to be 84 years old in Canada. That accounts for more than ⅓ of one’s life post-menopause! And that’s not including the years of transition through perimenopause. It’s a significant amount of time in a woman’s life!
Not only is it a significant amount of time, the decline of estrogen has significant repercussions. It can contribute to symptoms for almost 90% of women which can include things such as hot flashes, night sweats, urinary tract infections, vaginal dryness, and mood changes.
The estrogen decline is also a major contributing factor to bone density decline and to cardiovascular disease. You can read about that here. Both major causes of death and disease in aging women.
The Landscape is Changing:
While many women still struggle to talk about their concerns with menopause, the landscape is changing. Women are talking about their shared experiences, practitioners are more equipped with tools, more robust guidelines are being created, more thorough screening is happening, and better treatment options are being presented. Things are changing.
With more conversation, there is also sometimes more confusion. Conflicting information online, outdated resources being shared, one-size fits all approaches; it can be hard to know what to trust.
