Breaking the Silence on Menopause: Why We Need to Rethink Women's Health at Midlife

As a healthcare provider, I’ve seen it too many times. Women come into my office, feeling lost and frustrated by the changes they’re experiencing in perimenopause or menopause. They’re battling symptoms that are affecting everything from their physical health to their emotional well-being, and yet, when they turn to their doctors for help, they often hear the same thing: “It’s just a normal part of aging. There’s nothing we can do about it.”

This dismissal leaves many women feeling unheard and unsupported. Worse, many of them don’t even know where to turn for help. They confide in their close friends who are often struggling with similar issues. They’re embarrassed, these changes are affecting their relationships, their productivity, and their happiness. Day-to-day life becomes a balancing act as they try to manage what feels like an endless list of challenges.

💚 The Struggles Women Face During the Menopause Transition:

Perimenopause and menopause bring with them a host of symptoms that often go unaddressed: rising cholesterol levels, fluctuating blood sugar, unexplained weight gain (especially around the belly), and a growing list of medications. For many women, this is a stark contrast to their previous, healthy, active lifestyles. The sense of things spiraling out of control is real.

What’s more, menopause isn’t just a physical experience. It’s a life transition that happens during a time of immense responsibility for many women. Many are still raising children, caring for aging parents, and managing demanding careers. It’s a stage of life that’s often marked by high levels of stress and emotional strain, yet women are often expected to just “handle it.”

The truth is, menopause is a universal experience. Every woman goes through it, and yet, there’s still so much we don’t talk about.

🤝The Need for Better Care and Conversations

In Canada alone, there are more than 10 million women over the age of 40. That’s roughly a quarter of the population! Yet, despite the numbers, there are significant gaps in how women’s health at midlife is managed.

We need to do more to address the unique challenges women face at this stage of life. From providing better medical care and support to encouraging open conversations about menopause and aging, it’s clear that we need to rethink how we approach women’s health in midlife.

📩An Invitation to Change the Conversation

That’s why I’m excited to be part of a very important event: on Wednesday, May 7, I’ll be partnering with 10C to host a special screening of The (M) Factor: Shredding the Silence on Menopause, a documentary that takes a hard look at how menopause is treated in this country and why we need a revolution in women’s healthcare.

This documentary is an essential step toward breaking the silence around menopause and encouraging a broader, more open conversation about women’s health in midlife. It’s a film that challenges the status quo and advocates for a healthcare system that actually supports women through this major life transition.

Event Details:

  • Date: Wednesday, May 7

  • Time: Screening at 7:00 PM, followed by a panel discussion at 8:00 PM

  • Location: Guelph Farmer’s Market

  • Tickets: $20

This is a fantastic opportunity for women to come together, share their experiences, and start a dialogue about how we can change the way we think about menopause and women’s health. Whether you're going through menopause yourself or simply want to learn more, this event is for anyone who believes that it's time for a revolution in how we care for women at midlife.

Join us in this important conversation. Let’s break the silence and support one another through this transition.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Hi, I’m Dr. Janine, ND

I’m a Naturopathic Doctor currently practicing in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

I truly believe that our enjoyment of life is closely tied to how we feel physically. When we’re healthy, we can take on anything. But when we feel off, even the simplest tasks become overwhelming. I’ve been through hormonal shifts, sleepless nights as a parent, and the stress of balancing everything. But I also know that with the right strategy, we can go from surviving to thriving—and create a healthy, thriving family in the process.

I look forward to meeting you soon.
