When it comes to our periods, things like oral contraceptives and menstrual apps have trained our brains to expect our period in the EXACT same timeline every month, but is that really necessary? Honestly, it’s not necessary for healthy hormone production, and that’s why series like these are so important to demystify important factors around our menstrual cycles that many people are not aware of.

So, welcome to the secret Part 5 of my series “Understanding Your Period”. Let’s get into it!

Does the length of my cycle really matter?

what’s considered normal:

A cycle length anywhere from 21-35 days from Day 1 of bleeding to Day 1 of bleeding the next cycle is considered normal.

It's okay if it's not the same length every month as long as it's in this range and all of the other signs are pointing to healthy menstruation.

More important than the cycle length is that ovulation is happening.

And yes, even if your cycle is classically 27 days, it would still be considered normal for that to vary by up to 7 days.

what if it’s outside of this range?

One-Offs: A one-off cycle outside of this 21-35 day timeline is no cause for concern either - if you’re fighting an illness or travelling or experiencing some other major stressor that can delay ovulation, and subsequently delay menstruation.

Consistently Inconsistent: However, if cycles are consistently inconsistent beyond +/- 7 days of your normal OR <21 days or >35 days it’s worth a discussion.

We do expect this to happen in the late stages of perimenopause, but if you’re not at that phase we want to know why that’s happening!

I hoped this helped answer some questions you have about your cycle!

Hi, I’m Dr. Janine, ND

I’m a Naturopathic Doctor currently practicing in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

I truly believe that our enjoyment of life is closely tied to how we feel physically. When we’re healthy, we can take on anything. But when we feel off, even the simplest tasks become overwhelming. I’ve been through hormonal shifts, sleepless nights as a parent, and the stress of balancing everything. But I also know that with the right strategy, we can go from surviving to thriving—and create a healthy, thriving family in the process.

I look forward to meeting you soon.
